WhatsApp AI Agent and the Price per Conversation (2026)
October 14, 2026
Searching for the price per conversation of a WhatsApp AI agent has become a trap: that metric no longer exists as such. Meta changed the model twice in just over a year, and the useful answer today is not a rate but a multiplication: your messages times the price of each one. Here is the full math, no fine print.
What the price per conversation used to be
Until June 2025, the WhatsApp Business API charged per conversation: a 24-hour window opened by the first message, inside which you could write as much as you wanted for a single fee. Easy to budget, easy to explain.
That model ended. First Meta moved to charging per delivered message; then, since October 1, 2026, service messages —replying to a customer inside the window— stopped being free. The full timeline:

The new model: you pay per message
Today every delivered message is billed on two variables: the recipient's country and the message category (marketing, utility, authentication, or service). Two rules soften the math: undelivered messages are not charged, and volume tiers can reduce utility and authentication rates.
Reference rates per delivered message, in US dollars:
Country | Marketing | Utility | Service since Oct 2026 |
Mexico | $0.0305 | $0.0085 | ≈ $0.0085 |
Spain | $0.0707 | $0.0200 | billed per message |
These are Meta's public rates, identical for every platform: neither your provider nor ours sets them. The variable you do choose is how many messages you need.

The monthly math that actually matters:

A real example: 3,000 monthly conversations averaging six messages each, at Mexico's utility rate, come to about $153 per month in messaging. The same calculation with your numbers gives you a budget in two minutes.
Where the AI agent fits (and what it costs)
A WhatsApp AI agent has two separate costs worth keeping apart:
Messaging:
Set by Meta under the table above. Identical with any platform.
The software:
This is where offers diverge. With 008 Engage you can create your first agent at no cost and scale by usage; and the agent works precisely to keep Meta's share from exploding: it bundles the customer's message bursts into a single reply, skips re-engagement when it isn't worth it, and sends the second template only to those who didn't answer.
If you also take it to voice, the agent's price starts at $0.03 per minute with voice and language model included; only telephony is separate. No token surprises.
How to calculate your case in 3 steps
Count a typical month's conversations and multiply by average messages per conversation (include the customer's: yours are the billed ones).
Multiply by your country and category rate from Meta's official table.
Add the software cost and compare platforms against the same message count: that is the honest comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Does the price per conversation still exist?
No. Meta replaced it in July 2025 with per-delivered-message billing, and since October 2026 even service messages inside the 24-hour window are charged.
Does the AI agent make messaging more expensive?
The opposite: a good agent cuts the messages needed per conversation by answering with one complete reply and not re-sending templates to people who already responded.
Where can I see the official rate table?
On the WhatsApp Business Platform pricing page, by country and category. Our per-message pricing guide breaks it down with examples.
And if you want to see the math with your real conversations, you can create your first agent free or book a demo. To compare platforms under the same criteria, our honest comparison uses the same numbers.
